Sanger D. 'Whitey' Shafer has written some of the most momentous country songs of the last four decades, including 'I Just Started Hatin' Cheatin' Songs Today' (recorded by Moe Bandy), 'Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind' (recorded by George Strait), 'All My Exes Live in Texas' (recorded by George Strait), 'I Wonder Do You Think of Me', which was recorded by Keith Whitley (Thursday 1 July 1954 - Tuesday 9 May 1989), and his tribute to his friend, 'Lefty's Gone' (recorded by George Strait).

It was around this time when Sanger D. 'Whitey' Shafer was suffering from a lung disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The All-Star Sanger D. 'Whitey' Shafer Benefit included an impressive line-up, including Rhonda Vincent, Mark Wills, Teea Goans, Johnny Lee, Joe Stampley, Becky Hobbs, T. Graham Brown, Gene Watson, Jeannie Seely, David Frizzell, Dallas Frazier, Eddy Raven, John Conlee, Jimmy Fortune, James Carothers, newly signed WMN's traditionalist William Michael Morgan, and Moore & Moore.
