Gene Watson’s Grand Ole Opry Debut

Gene Watson at The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville

On Thursday 26 June 2025, Gene Watson reflected on the first time he sang on the hallowed stage of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

‘It’s hard to believe it was 60 years ago when I first sang on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry by invitation of The Wilburn Brothers – Doyle Wilburn (Monday 7 July 1930 – Saturday 16 October 1982) and Teddy Wilburn (Monday 30 November 1931 – Monday 24 November 2003).

I sang the Hank Williams (Monday 17 September 1923 – Thursday 1 January 1953) classic, ‘I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still In Love With You’ (written by Hank Williams), a timeless song still as great today as it was then, and I’m still grateful to that audience for giving me a standing ovation.

Here’s my version of that great Hank Williams song’
