Sanger D. ‘Whitey’ Shafer (Wednesday 24 October 1934 – Saturday 12 January 2019) wrote some of the most momentous country music songs, including ‘I Just Started Hatin’ Cheatin’ Songs Today’ (recorded by Moe Bandy), ‘Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind’ (recorded by George Strait), ‘All My Exes Live in Texas’ (recorded by George Strait), ‘I Wonder Do You Think of Me’, which was recorded by Keith Whitley (Thursday 1 July 1954 – Tuesday 9 May 1989), and his tribute to his friend, ‘Lefty’s Gone’ (recorded by George Strait).
It was around this time when Sanger D. ‘Whitey’ Shafer (Wednesday 24 October 1934 – Saturday 12 January 2019) was suffering from a lung disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

‘Stars Behind The Stars’ donated 100% of all proceeds to ‘The Assist The Officer Foundation’, which was formed by the Dallas Police Association.
‘The Assist The Officer Foundation’ provided financial assistance to an officer’s family in the event of a death of an active officer. There was a silent auction set up on-site.
‘Stars Behind The Stars’ featured performances by Tanya Tucker, The Oak Ridge Boys, Mickey Gilley (), Collin Raye, Janie Fricke, T. Graham Brown, T.G. Sheppard, Kelly Lang, The Bellamy Brothers, Johnny Lee, Gene Watson, Mark Wills, John Conlee, Ronnie McDowell and Moe Bandy.
On the night, there was a special appearance by Randy Travis.
Texas Country Music Hall of Fame Band provided their talent to back all of the artists. Texas Country Music Hall of Fame Band members included Mitchell Smithey, Wes Taylor, Charlie Shearer, Scott Moody, Curtis Randall, John Martinez, Angie McWhirter, Kyle Harris and Shawnda Rains.
