In the February 2020 issue of the United Kingdom’s highly influential ‘Country Music People‘ magazine, Gene Watson received a well deserved write-up in their ‘News’ section.
Gene Watson: Opry Member At Last
‘Somewhat belatedly, Gene Watson has been invited to join The Opry, but you’d be forgiven for just assuming that he’d been a member for 30 or 40 years, having made his debut on the hallowed stage 55 years ago as a 21-year-old.
Watson was surprised by Vince Gill during a recent Opry appearance when, following ‘Sometimes I Get Lucky‘ and ‘Nothing Sure Looked Good On You‘, Gill said, ‘he’s one of the greatest country singers that’s walked the earth. Would you mind singing ‘Farewell Party‘? The Opry told me if you would, you could be the next member of The Grand Ole Opry’.
Among Watson’s biggest hits are ‘Fourteen Carat Mind‘, ‘Paper Rosie‘, and his signature 1979 hit ‘Farewell Party‘. He will be formerly inducted into The Opry later this year.
Just take a moment to consider that Kelsey Ballerini and Dustin Lynch were inducted before Gene Watson. Go figure!’
