On Wednesday 26 April 2023, Gene Watson recalled an appearance on ‘Pop Goes The Country’, in 1976, which was hosted by Ralph Emery (Friday 10 March 1933 – Saturday 15 January 2022).

‘I found this old photo from around 1976, when I performed on the TV show, ‘Pop Goes The Country’.
It looks like I’m mesmerised talking to Ralph Emery (Friday 10 March 1933 – Saturday 15 January 2022), and no doubt I was, since I was still so new to the business and he was a big star.

I sang ‘Love In The Hot Afternoon‘, which was written by Kent Westberry and Vincent Wesley Matthews (1940 – Saturday 22 November 2003) on that show. That was the song that gave me a big start on my career and I’m still singing it at my shows and I hope you still like it too’
