On Monday 11 May 2026, Gene Watson discovered that Tammy Wynette was an accordion player.
‘The late, great Tammy Wynette (Tuesday 5 May 1942 – Monday 6 April 1998) was a friend of mine.
Whenever our tours overlapped, she’d always ask me to talk with her on her bus, and she asked me to sing harmony on her recording of ‘Tempted’ (written by Al Turney) back around 1987.
But it was just recently when I came across this Facebook post from the Nashville Musical History Tour that I learned Tammy was listed as an accordion player in the local AFM directory.

On Monday 6 July 1987, Tammy Wynette (Tuesday 5 May 1942 – Monday 6 April 1998) saw the release of ‘Higher Ground’ (Epic Records, 1987), which reached No.43 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart in 1987; one of the included tracks was ‘Tempted’ (written by Al Turney), which featured harmony vocals from Gene Watson.
